The 2011 CMT Music Awards happened Wednesday 8 p.m. ET in Nashville Bridgestone Arena, with Taylor Swift and Shania Twain kicking off the show. The two-and-a-half-hour awards show opened with a pre-taped segment of country sweethearts Taylor and Shania channeling Thelma & Louise in their legendary convertible. The show was hosted by Kid Rock.
Although Taylor Swift received a lot of criticism for leaning toward the pop genre, she still won VIDEO OF THE YEAR for “Mine.” She accepted the award via live satellite from her concert straight from Milwaukee. She was seen with a banjo around her neck as she said this to her fans who voted for her, “I don’t know what I did to deserve you guys.”
Husband and wife Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert won the male and female video of the year award. Shelton won Male Video of the Year award for, “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking” and Lambert won Female Video of the Year award for, “The House That Built Me.” Shelton also won Best Web Video of the Year for “Kiss My Country Ass.”
Just like Swift, Shelton accepted his award at the Los Angeles set for NBC’s “The Voice.” He is one of the judges for the TV show along with other judges like Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine.
Trey Fanjoy, the one who directed both songs that won female and male video of the year won Video Director of the Year. Justin Bieber won Collaborative Video of the Year award with Rascal Flatts for “That Should Be Me.” Lady Antebellum won Group Video of the Year award for “Hello World” and Sugarland won Duo Video of the Year award for “Stuck Like Glue.”
The Band Perry won the USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year award for “If I Die Young” and Zac Brown Band and Jimmy Buffett won CMT Performance of the Year award for “Margaritaville.”
The awards show was star studded as artists like The Band Perry, Luke Bryan, Rascal Flatts, Big and Rich, Gretchen Wilson and the Zac Brown Band performed on stage. The crowd went wild as American Idol’s final two country rock singers Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina introduced Sugarland for their performance on the show.
Sugarland performed the song “Stand Up,” where they the Gilbert family from Joplin, MO. The Gilbert family is one of the many who lost their home in the recent tornadoes. Sugarland’s performance was to encourage viewers to give to the American Red Cross and support the disaster relief being done for the victims of the calamity.
Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean and Ludacris also performed in the show. Jason Aldean closed the CMT awards by performing the ultimate country party song, “My Kinda Party.”
