The United States of America’s most powerful couple, President Barrack and First Lady Michelle Obama, was in London as part of their two-day state visit to Britain. The power couple was invited by Queen Elizabeth II. The Obamas were set to visit three other ally countries in Europe for political reasons.
The president and first lady were first greeted by Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, at Winfield House, the residence of the U.S. ambassador. The Winfield House is a stately mansion in Regent’s Park.
On Tuesday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton and Prince William came out to meet President Barrack and Michelle Obama at the Buckingham Palace. The newlyweds came and had a chat with the Obamas for a good 15 to 20 minutes talking about their wedding and their upcoming visit to California in July. The two couples talked in the 1844 room at the Buckingham Palace.
The meeting of the two top icons in women’s fashion didn’t escape the people’s eye. First Lady Michelle Obama was admired for wearing a full skirted silk dress by American designer Barbara Tfank which she paired with a cropped pink jacket. The Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton wore a Reiss Schola tan sheath which immediately sold out after pictures of her wearing the dress went out in public. Reiss’s website even crashed due to the traffic caused by the many people who went to their online stores to get the dress that Kate was wearing. The dress reportedly retails for £175 which is about $280-$340.
The Obamas were then greeted by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. They were to spend two nights at the Buckingham Palace as the Queen’s guests. They will be staying in the six-room suite which was last used by Prince William and Kate on their wedding night.
The queen then hosted lunch in honor of the Obama. The Obamas then laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at the Westminster Abbey and they listened as the Choir of Westminster Abbey sang for them.
The Obamas also meet with British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife. There was a special banquet held in the evening at the Buckingham Palace. Celebrities like Tom Hanks, Tim Burton, Kevin Spacey, Helena Bonham-Carter, Colin Firth, David Beckham and JK Rowling were among those who added luster to the list of invited guests.
The Obamas were in Ireland on Monday. There the President embraced the touch of Irish in his family. In the hamlet of Moneygall, Barack drank a pint of Guinness with a distant cousin then he gave his speech about the ties of Ireland and the U.S. before the people present in the center of Dublin.
The Obamas are due to leave on Thursday for France to attend the G8 summit.
