The stunning mother of six multiracial children once again flew to Lampedusa, Italy to spread her goodwill efforts to the distressed as well as to its helpful residents. On Sunday Angelina Jolie visited the small island of Lampedusa to personally visit the refugees who flee their chaotic countries in Libya and Tunisia at the same time give thanks to the residents of Lampedusa for accepting the migrants whose population runs around an estimate of 20,000.
The Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees roamed around the refugee center, mingled and talked with some of them, and attended a ceremony on Monday that was dedicated to the migrants lost in the season during their journey and as part of the Commemoration of the World Refugee Day on the same date.
Angelina released a statement saying that it was difficult for her to look at the beautiful seas without minding that many people including children have risk their lives. And unfortunately for some, lost their lives in the sea.
She was very grateful to the residents of Lampedusa for opening their place to the migrants. She could not help but ask them to contemplate how “horrible” the lives of the migrants really were that they are willing to risk everything they have just to find an uncertain better life in Europe.
Jolie asked, while she gave her speech wearing a plain black blouse and a jacket on, if they could put themselves in the shoes of the migrants and how they felt when they finally got in the borders of Italy. How could have the migrants felt when the guards were able to save them and brought them to a place that’s safe together with their children? How did they feel when they saw that there is still a chance for them to survive and start a new and better life?
Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Refugee Chief, also was in attendance and he asked the European countries to continue opening their gates to the refugees. Although the government of Italy was half-heartedly open about accepting the numerous migrants from Tunisia and Libya. They had to make a deal with the two countries that groups or individuals who do not qualify for the asylum will be returned back. Despite this, Guterres revealed that the debate among European countries regarding immigration is far from what is really going on. Just reflect on the number of Africans who flew to you Europe which is only a fraction of the numbers of those who have gone elsewhere.
Guterres also stated in a press conference that when the estimated 20,000 refugees arrived in the island of Lampedusa, it’s government can’t help but feel the pressure considering that the place is only small. He then added that if the whole of Europe will accept to this then whatever problem they may have will eventually be solved.
