NFL pro Hines Ward and his pro partner Kym Johnson got the mirror ball trophy for winning Dancing with the Stars. They battled against two other celebrities, Kirstie Alley with Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Chelsea Kane with her pro Mark Ballas.

Hines and the recently injured Kym danced the quickstep on their first performance on the finale where they scored a 29. Ward and Johnson’s halftime show-inspired freestyle brought the house down that the judges gave them a perfect score of 30 getting them a 59-point total.

Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy first danced a slower-paced samba where they scored 27 points and their freestyle routine started with slow and sensual dance which then turned into a quick-paced routine where Maksim lifted the now slimmer Kirstie for a number of times. They scored another 27 giving them a final total of 54 points.

Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas danced the samba first and their freestyle was a hip-hop and Latin-infused dance. They scored 29 and then 30 giving them a total of 59 points.

The winner though isn’t determined by the dancers’ points but on audience votes but Hines and Kym still beat the very popular Kirstie Alley. When the results came in, Ward and Kym came out on top.

While backstage after the show, Ward told reporters “Everyone loves Kirstie. So when it comes down to voting, I didn’t know how I’d match up to Kirstie. It’s just phenomenal. I didn’t want to let Kym down. I really wanted her to win her second mirror-ball trophy.”

Kym Johnson, Wards pro partner said, “I wanted to push myself, and I’m glad I did. It was worth it. I feel great.” Kim recently injured her neck during the show but fought on through to the end and didn’t have regrets.

The 60 year old Kirstie Alley who came in second said, “This the most extraordinary adventure I’ve ever been on in my life.”

Kirstie lost weight while competing in the show. She said that losing weight on Dancing with the Stars is fun, “I wasn’t so hungry when I was dancing. That coupled with insane amounts of dancing, I’m sure I lost it faster … I had the energy the whole way through it and that was sort of astonishing.”

Kirstie is sad though that she didn’t get the mirrored ball but the competition changed the way she foresees the future. Kirstie told People, “It sort of gave me a new view of what I wanted to do in my life. It made me see that I can work really hard for what I want. I guess at the end of the day, the sweetness would be the ultimate win. But like I said, [Maksim Chmerkovskiy] didn’t get a 20-year-old girl [as his partner].”
