Peter Parker’s spider bite that gave him superpowers is not accidental as it seems. From the trailer of “The Amazing Spider-Man” and footage previewed Friday at the Comic-Con fan convention, it’s clear that it is Spiderman’s destiny to encounter that spider that has that something to do with his past.
“It’s about a kid who goes out looking for his father, and he finds himself,” Director Marc Webb said. “I don’t want to get too specific beyond that, but that’s certainly a big part of what the story’s about, my angle on the Peter Parker character. The fact that he’s sort of an orphan, I think that’s something really interesting to explore.”
In the new Spiderman movie, Peter Parker played by Andrew Garfield will search for his biological father played by Campbell Scott) in order to unravel the secret of his past and direct his future.
“I love the idea of destiny having a hand in Peter Parker’s fortune, and not just being a slip and a fall,” Garfield said in an interview. “I love the idea of him being meant to assume this symbol.”
Peter was raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May in the previous movie that starred Tobey Maguire when he was bitten by a mutant spider during a school field trip. In the new Spiderman, that fateful bite occurred during one of Peter’s mission. Emma Stone, who played Gwen Stacy, Peter’s love interest in this film said “There’s a lot that leads him to that spider bite in this one, it’s not just a school field trip. He snuck in there for some reason.”
The film just finished shooting a few weeks ago and it is due in theaters July 2012. A one-armed scientist (Rhys Ifans) turn into a hulking green villain known as the Lizard is Spiderman’s nemesis.
Andrew Garfield was a relative unknown when he was introduced as the new Spiderman. Since then, his career had blossomed with movies like “Never Let Me Go” and “The Social Network” which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
During a question and answer portion at Comic-Con, Parker told of his adulation for Spiderman. “Peter Parker inspired me to feel stronger. He made me, Andrew, braver.” Before introducing Webb, Stone and other collaborators, Garfield gushed: “This is definitely the coolest moment of my life.”
And like the typical Spiderman character, Peter struggled to control his strength and other superpowers, then running afoul of the police, who declare him a masked vigilante.
