Comedian and “30 Rock” actor Tracy Morgan issued an apology after saying some nasty anti-gay remarks on his performance at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on June 3. “I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”
Tracy Morgan said some remarks about gays saying, “Gays need to quit being p**sies and not be whining about something as insignificant as bullying. Gay is something that kids learn from the media and programming.” He even said that he would kill his son if he’d say he’s gay saying that his son, “better talk to me like a man and not in a gay voice or I’ll pull out a knife and stab that little n**ger to death.”
Tracy also told the audience, “I don’t “f*cking care if I piss off some gays, because if they can take a f*cking d**k up their ass … they can take a f*cking joke.” A gay audience member named Kevin Rogers posted, “Why I No Longer ‘Like’ Tracy Morgan — A Must Read,” in Facebook. Kevin said that Tracy’s performance was full of homophobic references and that about 10-15 people walked out of the Ryman Auditorium during that performance.
The Ryman Auditorium issued a statement after Tracy’s performance, “The Ryman Auditorium regrets that people were offended by statements made by Tracy Morgan during his June 3 appearance. The Ryman does not control the content presented by people appearing on its stage, nor does it endorse any of the views of, or statements made by, such persons.”
Tina Fey, Tracy’s costar and creator of 30 Rock also issued an apology for Tracy’s words on his performance. She said that Tracy is, “not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person.” Fey is also hoping that their gay and lesbian costars in 30 Rock would accept Tracy’s apology for, “without whom Tracy would not have lines to say, clothes to wear, sets to stand on, scene partners to act with, or a printed-out paycheck from accounting to put in his pocket.”
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) however is not contented with Tracy Morgan’s apology saying that Tracy should refrain from saying anti-gay remarks, “and send a strong message that anti-gay violence is not something to joke about.” Morgan, “now has a responsibility to make amends for his horribly hurtful and dangerous ‘comedy’ routine.”
